Once upon a time, TNA had a proper X-Division that they actually put some effort into; believe it or not. They had a loaded X-Division roster stacked with names such as Chris Sabin, Alex Shelley, Jay Lethal, Sonjay Dutt, Petey Williams among others and every year TNA would hold the World X Cup, a tournament that brought together some of the finest talent from all over the world including Mexico, Japan and Europe with the winning country or continent being crowned the winner at the end (It was usually won the TNA as shocking as it might sound).
In 2008 two of the talents that were brought in from Japan were two of Dragon Gate’s finest, Naruki Doi & Masato Yoshino. They took on The Motor City Machine Guns on Impact before the tournament began in a World X Cup warmup match and what came of it was one of the craziest mind blowing six minute matches I’ve ever seen. Sabin & Shelley have always been known for their speed and mesmerising synchronised tag team moves, but they met their match in Doi & Yoshino, the team known as Speed Muscle. Yoshino is the fastest wrestler I had ever seen (and still is) which resulted in a match that looked like a video game or a video tape stuck on fast forward.
At the time this was the first time I had seen the Dragon Gate style and couldn’t believe what I was witnessing which made me hunt down lots of Doi & Yoshino matches. Of course the Machine Guns were a highlight of TNA at the time, and even though Shelley is doing amazing things as part of The Time Splitters at the minute, hopefully down the line we’ll get Sabin & Shelley back together to rekindle the magic of the Motor City Machine Guns.
