New Japan Cup 2015 Second Round Recap

New Japan Cup Second Round Results from Korakuen Hall:

YOSHI-HASHI defeated Jay White
This was White’s biggest singles match to date and he had yet another great showing. He got in a lot and even though we knew he wouldn’t win, he still looked like he might pull off the upset.  YOSHI won after hitting his Swanton Bomb.

Satoshi Kojima, Tiger Mask, Manabu Nakanishi, Ryusuke Taguchi & Mascara Dorada defeated Captain New Japan, Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Tomoaki Honma, KUSHIDA & Jushin Liger
This was a fun ten man tag with lots going on. Tiger & Liger had a nice exchange proving that their upcoming match will probably be better than expected. Dorada & KUSHIDA have incredible chemistry, so hopefully they will meet in the BOSJ this summer. Dorada pulled out a huge moonsault onto everyone on the floor which looked amazing. At one point Taguchi hit a Kokeshi on Honma. Taguchi seems to add more ass based offence with every match. Kojima pinned Captain after a Lariat. After the match TenKoji had a meltdown as they had to be separated.

Yohei Komatsu & Hiroshi Tanhashi defeated Sho Tanaka & Yuji Nagata
This was amazing! The young lions were given time to shine and they did just that. Right from the start when Tanaka slapped Tanahashi across the face it was on with the young lions bringing it to the veterans. The spotlight was on Tanaka & Komatsu throughout and they looked like they belonged with two of NJPW’s finest ever. Komatsu made Tanaka submit to a single leg Boston Crab. Every should watch this match, as its a perfect example of how to make two young stars look great.

Shinsuke Nakmura, Kazuchika Okada, Tomohiro Ishii & Kazushi Sakuraba defeated Cody Hall, Karl Anderson, Doc Gallows & Tama Tonga
This was another fun tag match with Hall looking impressive in his Korakuen Hall debut. Anderson & Gallows were hilarious as they sparred on the ring apron in preparation for Sakuraba, who then started swinging at Anderson, who backed off. I still don’t see the point of Sakuraba, as that was his whole contribution to the match. Hall hit an incredible looking discus lariat on Nakamura before Nakamura hit a pair of Boma Ye’s for the win.

Second Round Match
Togi Makabe defeated Yujiro Takahashi
Yujiro looked awful and almost killed Makabe when he messed up a turnbuckle powerbomb. The match was okay, with Makabe winning after a Spider German Suplex and King Kong Knee Drop.

Second Round Match
Kota Ibushi defeated Toru Yano
Yano came to the ring pointing and laughing at Tanahashi, who was on commentary as Tanahashi had a look of disgust on his face which was priceless. Yano did all the trickery that he beat Tanahashi with and it looked like he was gonna steal another with some convincing near falls until Ibushi quickly caught Yano with a sunset flip off the top rope to out-Yano Toru Yano.

Second Round Match
Tetsuya Naito defeated Bad Luck Fale
This was another really good match with Naito getting a lot out of the monster Fale. Naito landed on his head awkwardly after a vicious Fale lariat. Naito chopped down Fale who’s size is always a sight to behold. Naito got the win when he turned a Bad Luck Fall into a hurricanrana and a roll up. Naito faces Ibushi in the semi final.

Second Round Match
Hirooki Goto defeated Katsuyori Shibata
This was the match of the night and the match of the tournament so far. This was as you’d expect with these two as it was a physical, stiff, hard fought war. Shibata took out Goto’s arm early and Goto did the same to Shibata later on. Shibata’s corner dropkick is one of the most vicious moves anywhere in pro wrestling. Goto won when he hit Shouten Kai. Shibata looked great in defeated and the Korkuen crowd were firmly behind him. Shibata raised Goto’s hand after the match. Makabe & Goto will meet in the second semi final. Goto has said that he will challenge for the IWGP heavyweight championship if he wins the tournament.

This was a really good, fun show and is available on demand at NJPW World.

Not a boxer but a pro wrestling fan. If there’s a ring I’ll watch it, so naturally I have a lot of opinions (complaints).
