Match of the Month – June 2015

Matthew:

KUSHIDA vs. Kyle O’Reilly – NJPW Best of the Super Juniors Final

This was a career making performance for both guys.  This is the sort of match that will be looked back on in years as the match that launched both guys to another level.  O’Reilly & KUSHIDA are two of the best junior heavyweights in the world today and this match proved it.  They had a perfect match with everything from mat wrestling, to high flying, to hard strikes, to submissions, to amazing counter wrestling.  You’ll be hard pressed to find a more perfect wrestling match this year. If you have yet to see this match, go and find it on NJPW World.

Honourable Mentions:

John Cena vs Kevin Owens – WWE Money in the Bank

AJ Styles & The Young Bucks vs. Kazuchika Okada & RPG Vice – ROH TV

Will Ospreay vs Matt Sydal – Rev Pro Summer Sizzler

Jay Lethal vs Jay Briscoe – ROH Best in the World

Heather:

Jay Lethal vs. Jay Briscoe – ROH Best in the World

This match felt like the biggest match I had seen in a long time. It had a big fight atmosphere and felt like you were watching something really important. Lethal and Briscoe each had their respective streaks and their viable animosity for one another. We all knew that both these men could go but man, did they step up big time. There were multiple near falls that had me on the edge of my seat and when the ending came and Lethal had picked up the win, it felt like I had won too. This match, was everything that was right with this show (and the show had a lot right about it). Watch this match. Appreciate what these two men did.

Honourable Mentions:

Roderick Strong vs. Shinsuke Nakamura – ROH TV

AJ Styles & The Young Bucks vs. Kazuchika Okada & RPG Vice – ROH TV

Roderick Strong vs. CJ Parker – Lucha Libre Espectacular

Silver King vs. Dr Wagner Jr – Lucha Libre Espectacular

Mark:

Matt Sydal vs. Will Ospreay – Rev Pro Summer Sizzler: Truly excellent match that I ended up watching a few times over, Sydal and Ospreay are near perfect opponents for each other. There were a lot of things that made this match fun to watch, Sydal somewhat working the heel role here was different but he did a good job at it, his facial expressions, working of the limbs and even posing with Ospreay’s title mid match really put it over for me. There were some really awesome reversals such as Sydal reversing Ospreay’s springboard kick into a reversed spike hurricanrana to set up his shooting star press for the first fall. Ospreay really played up the underdog role here, it’s what he does best and he does an exceptional job at it, Sydal worked his arm a good amount of the match and he did a pretty good job of selling it throughout, all these proponents and much more made this (in my opinion) the best match on a card that included Roderick Strong vs. Shinsuke Nakamura and AJ Styles vs. Marty Scurll, which says a lot, this and the whole Rev Pro Summer Sizzler show is most definitely something worth a watch or two.

Honorable mentions:

Kyle O’Reilly vs. KUSHIDA – NJPW BOSJ Final

Donovan Dijak vs. Biff Busick – Beyond Wrestling, Life Sucks And Then You Die

John Cena vs. Cesaro – WWE Raw 6/2

Kevin Owens vs. John Cena – WWE Money In The Bank

Damo O’Connor vs. Tomihiro Ishii – Rev Pro Summer Sizzler

Not a boxer but a pro wrestling fan. If there’s a ring I’ll watch it, so naturally I have a lot of opinions (complaints).
