Match of the Month – October 2015

October was another loaded month for pro wrestling with WWE Hell In A Cell, an EVOLVE weekend, and NXT Takeover, NJPW King of Pro Wrestling and the Rev Pro/NJPW shows in the UK among other things.  Here are our favourite matches of the month.

Heather Jeannine:

Johnny Gargano vs Ethan Page – I Quit – Evolve 49

This was such a great match. If you haven’t seen it, you really need to. This match was by far and away, one of the best match I’ve seen from Evolve this year. There was so much passion and hard work that went into this main event. Gargano was great here as the hero everyone wanted to win. My real praise goes to Page, who came into Evolve and has just blown everyone away. He is the best heel on their roster and was completely the star here. Again, this was a fantastic main event that everyone should go out of their way to see.

Honorable Mentions:

RPG Vice vs Timothy Thatcher & TJ Perkins – EVOLVE 49

Roman Reigns vs. Bray Wyatt – Hell In A Cell

Bayley vs Sasha Banks – NXT Takeover: Respect

Tracy Williams vs. TJ Perkins – Evolve 50

Matthew Macklin:

Brock Lesnar vs The Undertaker – WWE Hell In A Cell

This felt like a special big time main event and it could very well be one of the last great Undertaker matches.  From the entrances to Taker slamming the door shut, to the story of Taker as the veteran gunslinger trying not to die, it was all pro wrestling drama at it’s finest.  Taker & Lesnar beat the hell out of each other and the added element of blood only added to the emotion and intensity of it.  There were so many great moments and a fitting finish with Lesnar going over.  Taker proved that even with his limitations he can still create something special and is without a doubt one of the greatest ever.

Honourable Mentions

Kazuchika Okada vs Will Ospreay – Rev Pro Global Wars UK

Roman Reigns vs Alberto Del Rio vs Kevin Owens vs Dolph Ziggler – Raw October 26

AJ Styles vs Will Ospreay vs Marty Scurll – Rev Pro Uprising

Bayley vs Sasha Banks – NXT Takeover: Respect

Mark Anthony

Donovan Dijak vs. Jon Gresham – Beyond Wrestling, Gratitude Era

This match was billed as David vs Goliath, and man did it live up to that (except David didn’t win this time, obviously). Dijak is 6’7, Gresham is 5’4 the height difference here was insane, but damn did it make up for an excellent match with great storytelling from these guys. If you’ve never seen Jon Gresham wrestle before I highly suggest seeking him out any way you can, like I said he’s a smaller guy, but to deny that he’s one of the best technical workers in the world would be idiotic, the man can work against literally anyone as he showed here against an opponent who is a whole foot and three inches taller than him. Dijak has been absolutely killing it in Beyond for the last half year or so, he’s Mr. Match of the Night and he absolutely didn’t disappoint here, stealing the show once again.

Honourable Mentions:

Sasha Banks vs. Bayley – NXT Takeover: Respect

Kyle O’Reilly vs. KUSHIDA –  Rev Pro Uprising

AJ Styles vs. Will Ospreay vs. Marty Scurll – Rev Pro Uprising

Tommy End vs. AJ Styles – wXw World Tag Team Tournament Night 3

Will Ospreay vs. Paul Robinson – PROGRESS Wrestling Chapter 22

Mark Osborne

Johnny Gargano vs. Ethan Page – I Quit Match –  Evolve 49

I may be biased because I was in the building in Queens for this one, but everything from the set up to the execution to the aftermath of this match was brilliant. Page and Gargano had battled for the better part of a year in Evolve. In fact, they had a crazy No DQ match at Evolve 47 in the same building. But this match was an I Quit match and it was the culmination of the best feud on the indies this year. The result was legitimately in question going into the match because of rumors Gargano was headed to NXT full-time. Page trolled Sami Zayn before the show, trolled the fans by entering to Triple H’s music (in The Rock’s tracksuit), and the babyface (plural, if you include Zayn) enjoyably came out on top. The top-rope DDT counter through a table was one of the spots of the year.

Honorable Mentions:

Bayley vs. Sasha Banks – NXT Takeover: Respect (maybe I’m biased on this one too, seeing the original in person, but I liked the Brooklyn match better)

Brock Lesnar vs. The Undertaker – WWE Hell in a Cell

Kenny Omega vs. Matt Sydal – NJPW King of Pro-Wrestling

Su Yung vs. Madison Eagles – Shine 30

Best friends an ocean apart who probably care a little too much about pro wrestling.
