Match of the Month – February 2016

February seen some incredible matches all over the world, particularly from NJPW.  WWE had some great matches this month too, but some of the best came from the indies. Here are our picks for the February match of the month.

Matthew:

Pete Dunne vs Ryan Smile vs Will Ospreay – OTT Ah Ted

This is one of the greatest matches I have ever seen live. The insane OTT atmosphere and people losing their minds at seeing the spectacular Ospreay live for the first time made this one of the coolest wrestling experiences I’ve ever been apart of.  These three guys absolutely tore it up in a next level pro wrestling match with some of the most incredible sequences and innovation you will ever see.  I have seen countless Ospreay matches and knew what to expect, and this still blew my mind.  Ospreay is sensational, Pete Dunne is one of the best heels in Europe and Ryan Smile is one of the best kept secrets in wrestling. If you haven’t already, go and watch this match at vimeo.com/overthetopwrestling.

Mark Anthony:

Trevor Lee vs. Roy Wilkins – CWF Mid-Atlantic – End of an Era 2016

I’ve known Trevor Lee to do long matches for a while now so I wasn’t really worried about this match being 105 minutes long lot most people when they first heard it, my standards were just set really high, and Lee & Wilkins surpassed those with ease. This match was truly beautiful, the story being told here is easy to catch on to even if this is your first time watching a CWF Mid-Atlantic match and it honestly didn’t even feel like I’ve been sitting watching for almost 2 hours. Don’t let the duration of the match turn you off, watch this! I can honestly say in my opinion it’s a modern day classic.

Kenny Omega vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi – NJPW The New Beginning in Niigata

New Japan did a brilliant job of making Kenny Omega look like a big deal leading up to this match. But let’s face it, if this match had been a dud, Omega wouldn’t have looked like nearly the star he’d been made out to be. Thankfully, it was just the opposite in this near perfect match. Omega looked brilliant, and most importantly they pulled the trigger on him becoming the new Intercontinental champion. Just watch New Year’s Dash and New Beginning in Niigata if you want to see two perfect matches making a star.
